After reaching out to Mathieu and with his permission, I decided to share the letter itself in hopes that it might help him find a potential buyer/partner to connect with, a great developer to work on his projects with, or who knows, perhaps someone else who might be able to help him in his journey. In due time he realized the ship was sinking, and had to accept the painful truth that he would now have to abandon it and move on. He quit his job, and learned the basics of building, monetizing and sustaining a business to support his venture. He created something unique and realized after receiving validation that touched him at a personal level that he could do something even more amazing with his creation. He is clearly passionate about a lot of things and defiant to be put into stereotypical buckets like we are all often put into. In a nutshell, Mathieu's story is one some others might be able to relate to as well. I share with him, as might you, some experiences in bits and pieces - of exploring your creative potential, of self-doubt, of joy on knowing your work is making an impact, of risk, of being a first-time manager/leader, of challenges, responsibility, failure, of sometimes feeling all alone, of self-discovery and lessons learned, of gratitude - all rolled into one journey that is far from over. Knowing that psykopaint started as a side-project for Mathieu initially, the letter hit a little close to home, although I do not personally share his experience and journey. While exploring digital art applications, I came across / sometime last year. In the past year, I have been doing a lot of creative side projects and exploring various art mediums, something I had stopped doing during college and then graduate school because there was always an easy excuse not to, and I had clearly underestimated how important they were to me personally. I'm doing it because I recognize, and know the power of, a story that comes straight from the heart. I do not know him personally, but I felt I had to try and share this guy's story. As someone who always reads emails and blog posts from startups/projects that do not make it (I suppose out of curiosity and a desire to learn why they feel they failed, in their own words), I was taken by surprise at the honesty, authenticity, pain and despair yet positive hope for the future in this one.
